Château d’Yquem 2008

Prestige / Sauternes

At Yquem, a rare alchemy combines all the favourable elements of the Sauternes region. The soils, warm and dry on the surface, benefit from the accumulation of heat by the large gravel pebbles. They also have good water reserves due to the clayey nature of their sub-soils. Numerous springs are outcrops, and controlling the soil’s water regime has long been the reason for drainage (100 km of drains since the 19th century). The vast size of Yquem has enabled the vineyards (113 hectares) to be planted on a very wide range of the Sauternes geological mosaic. The resulting extraordinary variety of soils is fundamental to the final complexity of Yquem wine.

Tasting notes

“The 2008 Yquem, now in bottle, has a nuanced bouquet, with scents of clear honey, lime flower, vanilla and orange blossom that is beautifully defined. The palate is very harmonious on the entry, with a fine thread of acidity, tense and full of energy like the 2010 tasted alongside, with notes of white peach, citrus lemon, clear honey and a hint of quince. Long and persistent on the finish, this is a very fine Yquem that might be over-looked between the 2007 and 2009, but is superb Sauternes in its own right.” Neal Martin 96/100
