The soils, warm and dry on the surface, benefit from the accumulation of heat by the large gravel pebbles. They also have good water reserves due to the clayey nature of their sub-soils. Numerous springs are outcrops, and controlling the soil&#8217;s water regime has long been the reason for drainage (100 km of drains since the 19th century). The vast size of Yquem has enabled the vineyards (113 hectares) to be planted on a very wide range of the Sauternes geological mosaic.
